Lopwell Barn, a residential centre just 10 miles from Plymouth city and only 6 miles from Tavistock. Lopwell Barn is used mainly by families and groups wanting to enjoy nature in a relaxing and comfortable environment.
The barn has two bedrooms, the first sleeps 10 people on 5 bunks and the second sleeps 8 in 4 bunks. It also has a large kitchen and living room.
Recently we have been developing our wood workshop and outdoor area. We now run canoe building, coracle making and upcycling projects and have a good selection of tools and a beautiful work space to run these from. The outdoor area has also been improved and now includes a permanent shelter with a fire pit, woodstore and pizza oven all overlooking the estuary and surrounded by trees and meadows.
The barn itself is location in Lopwell Nature Reserve in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, nestled on the edge of Dartmoor and directly on the shores of the River Tavy.
We are looking to establish a Friends of Lopwell action group to support us in the development of the barn and grounds. The aim of the group is to meet weekly and identify ways to make the centre more environmentally sound. We have funding to install a woodburner and set up a wood collection scheme, plant fruit trees and bushes, initiate a composting and recycling scheme.
The Zone runs a ‘Drop in’ for young people aged 13-25 years which provides a safe and confidential space for young people to talk and seek information, advice and support about a number of issues including homelessness, changing mental health, relationships and sexual health and general support.
Our other projects include: ZAP (Zone Accommodation Project), Two mental health projects: Icebreak - an early intervention service offering support to young people aged 16 - 25 who are experiencing severe emotional distress; Insight - an early intervention service offering support to young people aged 18 – 35 who may be experiencing psychosis; Group Work (providing outdoor activities to young people aged 13 – 25 often using Lopwell Barn as a base) and Wiser Wonga – improving financial confidence in young tenants and residents.
Ideally e-mail or phone Jon White to express an interest but if this is not possible we meet at 9.30 at the Zone PL1 2SR or 10.30 at the barn PL6 7BZ. You will need to come dressed for being outdoors (some boots and waterproofs available to borrow) and bring lunch.
